I am a self-taught home cook. I spent a lot of time in the kitchen cooking with whatever idea I might have in mind along with the ingredients I have in hands. It’s a complicated process, and I like making complicated dishes (especially for baked goods). So when I tried to make 3 simple dishes listed below, and I failed miserably, that was definitely not fun.
Dish #1: Cream of Wheat – I thought to myself who can fail making that? Well, apparently I can. I don’t have this dish in Vietnam so I don’t know what it is until my boyfriend asked me to make it one day. I followed the direction on the box for every single step but it turned out to be all lumps. I tried again and again, same results. No matter how much I whisked it during the process, they were still lumpy. I know before starting there might be lumps since you don’t put any kind of powder into hot water. Normally, you should mix it with cold water then heat it up. If I do that to this dish, the cream of wheat might get overcooked so I won’t make this dish again.
Dish #2: French toast – I have seen this dish made by kids on T.V before so I thought it should be easy enough. But no, it turned out terribly for me. I don’t know what went wrong. I followed a recipe online to make the toast since I am not familiar with the process. The toast didn’t have a crunch; it’s just kind of soft and soggy no matter how long I cooked it for. I didn’t event soak it for that long. I haven’t made French toast again ever since.
Dish #3: Grilled Cheese sandwich – I made this for my boyfriend, and he didn’t like it. Out of all these 3 dishes, this has to be the most successful one. I have Cuisinart Griddler so I used it for this dish. I thought it make the sandwich turn out better, and cut the cooking time down since both side will be brown up at the same time. The reason my boyfriend didn’t like it was because the bread got too pressed together. He likes it to be fluffed up which can be achieved by frying it on one side at a time. I offered to make this again but he refused so I guessed I failed again.
I found the fact I can’t make these simple dishes quite ironic. It irritates me very much because no matter what I do, I can’t make them right. Practice doesn’t make perfect in this case. So do you have any dishes you can’t make?
